What your money does

Rob was supported by a YMCA volunteer mentor for three years, here is how he reflects on the journey…

‘I was getting into fights every night…you know, breaking into hotels and hanging out with the wrong crowd. At 13, I was part of a gang and I just did whatever the others were doing. I was drinking alcohol and using cannabis, and I didn’t really think about the consequences. I got into trouble with the police a lot and things at home weren’t good either. In many ways, I felt like an outsider in my own home and I wasn’t getting along with my family. At school, things were even worse as I was constantly excluded. Even the part-time time table didn’t work; I turned up late for class and didn’t really care about school. In the end, I was on my final warning from the police when I got referred to YMCA’s Plusone mentoring programme’

‘I didn’t like my reputation in the community. I began to see that the crowds I hung around with were a bad influence so I began to stay in. At first I felt as though I was missing out by being inside and playing on the Xbox, but now when I see those guys we don’t fight…I just say hi and walk on. Windows don’t get smashed anymore, and I feel safer within my own community’

Today Rob (16) is enjoying his work placement in McDonalds but his real passion is to work with bikes.
