In the beginning...

The YMCA was a child born of necessity.

George Williams a farmer's son from Somerset who had come to London to work became aware that the city offered young men few recreational opportunities other than saloons and brothels. In 1844 he gathered a group of young men together for prayer and reflection and as a consequence of their discussions they decided to set up what quickly became known as the Young Men’s Christian Association.

They recognised a need in their own immediate surroundings and set about endeavouring to meet that need. That has been the strength of the YMCA movement throughout its history - fulfilling the needs of the people in the communities in which it served.
