Finding Creative Solutions To Mental Health Challenges – Skye Residential28 August 2018
Last weekend a group of 10 young people kick-started our work on the #IAMWHOLE campaign.
Gathered on the picturesque Isle of Skye, the group developed creative solutions to some of the most pressing issues young people face when it comes to mental health.
The group discussed barriers to accessing adequate mental health services and looked at innovative ways to address this in their communities.
One of the issues that emerged from their discussion is the lack of safe spaces where young people can talk about mental health. One of the groups came up with the concept of a community app that would give young people such a space. Another designed a phone line and messaging service.
The groups had to think through every aspect of implementing their ideas including fundraising, partnerships and referrals. They then pitched their ideas to the whole team.
The participants, who came from YMCAs all over Scotland, will now be delivering mental health awareness sessions in their local YMCAs. Through this, they will broaden the reach of the #IAMWHOLE campaign.
Stephi, who attended the residential said: “I can’t wait to get going and really get my teeth into the ideas that came out of this weekend.”
Matthew Delleqaglia who facilitated the training sessions said: “I’m excited to see the impact this weekend will have on our local communities as we couldn’t have asked for a better team of young people to be creating safe spaces, bringing positive change and raising awareness for others suffering from mental ill health.”
