YMCA Scotland is the headquarters organisation for all the YMCAs
across Scotland. Today there are 38 local YMCAs operating across
Scotland from Stornoway in the Western Isles to Stranraer in Dumfries and Galloway. Each local association operates autonomously with its
own management committee delivering programmes in response to local
needs.
Across Scotland YMCAs work to support and develop over
12,000 young people every week under the age of twenty five.
The primary target group for YMCAs includes young people struggling
to cope with issues such as drugs, alcohol, family crises, housing,
offending and other forms of anti-social behaviour. Whatever the problem YMCAs are there to serve the needs of those most vulnerable and excluded from our communities.
YMCAs also work
with thousands of men and women over the age of 25 in health and
fitness, volunteering, parenting, employment and a wide range of other programmes. Working with young people in the YMCA does not happen in isolation but in a context of family, community, school and employers, parents and partner agencies. It is important to YMCAs that young people gain the confidence to achieve their full potential, to engage effectively in community debate and to realise the opportunities that exist today in our global village.
An organisation with a clear Christian value base, YMCA Scotland seeks to share the love of Christ through serving those least able, those without a voice and through accepting people of all faiths and of none to actively combat sectarianism, racism and all forms of persecution and intolerance.
